kindness in our world. These are just some ideas. It is not meant to be a comprehensive list.
- Adopt a soldier
- Ask someone "How are you really doing?"—and then really listen to her response.
- At work, offer to transfer a caller who needs help from another department.
- Be a designated driver
- Be a friend who listens
- Be kind to someone you dislike.
- Before a friend moves away, give her your favorite recipe or quote and a photo of the two of you together.
- Bring a box of doughnuts to share at the office.
- Bring someone a souvenir
- Bring your assistant coffee.
- Call or write to a teacher who changed your life.
- Clean up graffiti
- Cook a meal for someone.
- Donate used books to a library
- Don't interrupt when someone is explaining herself.
- Each time you get a new item of clothing, give away something old.
- Encourage someone who seems despondent.
- Forgive someone a debt–and never bring it up again.
- Give a homeless person your doggie bag.
- Give care packs to the homeless.
- Help a child learn
- Help a friend pack for a move.
- Help a mother carry her baby stroller up the subway stairs, or hold a door open for her.
- Help someone for free.
- Help someone whose car has broken down.
- Help someone with yard work
- Leave a generous tip for a pleasant waiter.
- Let a fellow driver merge into your lane.
- Let someone go in front of you in line.
- Listen with all your senses.
- Make blankets for the homeless
- Mentor a child or teen
- Offer change when the person in front of you at the register comes up short.
- Offer to baby-sit for a single mom.
- Offer to pick up groceries for an elderly neighbor, especially in extreme weather.
- Out of the blue, send flowers to a friend.
- Pass along a great book you've just finished reading.
- Pay the toll for the driver behind you.
- Pick up trash
- Put a coin in an expired meter.
- Put your shopping cart back in its place.
- Read to someone
- Return a shopping cart
- Say "Good morning" to a person standing next to you in the elevator.
- Say "I love you" to someone you love.
- Say "please" and "thank you"—and really mean it.
- Simply say "I'm sorry" when you're wrong.
- Take a minute to direct someone who is lost, even though you're rushing.
- Take someone's shift as the car-pool parent.
- Thank your police or fire department
- Throw away your trash—and someone else's—after a movie, picnic or visit to a park.
- Use less plastic
- Visit an animal shelter
- Visit the elderly in a nursing home
- Volunteer to take care of a friend's dog while he is vacationing.
- When you're on a crowded train or bus, offer your seat to an elderly, disabled or pregnant person.
- Write a letter to a child who could use some extra attention. Kids love getting mail.
- Write a letter to someone who made a difference in your life.
- Write a note to the boss of someone who helps you, and explain how great a job that person is doing.
