R is for Rebuilding

April 2, 2013 Sharon Jacobson

This morning, I received an email from a long time friend who I have not spoken to for a long time. After looking briefly at our April newsletter said, “You have really evolved and come into your own.  I am very proud of you.  You have taken all the broken pieces in your life and have allowed the spirit of healing and love to make something unique and wonderful out of it.” I know that what she wrote came from a space of love. However, as I thought about it, I realized I had not made something beautiful out of the broken pieces. I had left that which was broken behind and begun to build a life for myself that was built on qualities that are life giving and left behind all that which I had allowed to become broken and the beliefs which contributed to that process got left behind.

One of the things that scares people the most about change is leaving the old behind. What do we do with what we are leaving behind? The answer is nothing. Leave it there and build the life you want from scratch. Create a new life for yourself built on a foundation of love for self. This new life should be constructed with the amazing and life giving materials, which include integrity, self-respect, and lots of enthusiasm and passion.

Rebuilding is a form of metamorphosis; it is similar to the process a caterpillar undergoes to become a butterfly. The butterfly left all that was not about being a butterfly behind. Rebuilding a life is not always easy. Sometimes it helps to have someone to work with during the process. Perhaps the most essential tool in the process is faith in yourself and the journey, knowing that as you create this new life, it will become what you envision it to be over time.

One of the other important tools is to be open to change. As we move away from the old, we give ourselves permission to connect with the Divine within, our inner wisdom. For too many people, it has become a source of wisdom from which we have become disconnected. So learning to listen to our senses again is an important part of our metamorphosis.

Imagine if the larvae inside the cocoon did not listen to its senses as it dissolved and evolved within this cocoon, how would it know what to do or when it would be ready to fly. As this butterfly listened to its intuitive spirit and learned about itself, so do we. When we listen to our intuitive spirit, we give ourselves permission to learn about our gifts, our lives, and ourselves.

Dream it, so you can achieve it. Your job is to reconnect with your senses and give your permission to reconnect with your intuitive energy and imagination. As these words, sounds, and images come together, you will gain clarity about what the life you are rebuilding will look like. Listen to your spirit throughout the process. If something is working and feels good then keep it, if not then release it, but be responsible for the consequences of what we are discarding.

Then fly – just spread your wings and fly. You may need to do some fine-tuning now and then, but enjoy the journey. Savor this time and celebrate all the hard work you have done in the rebuilding process. Take time to keep the enjoyment coming into your rebuilt life.
