Silence is a Bridge

April 10, 2017 Sharon Jacobson

At Love & Inspiration yesterday morning, I commented about how silence is a bridge, not a barrier. Silence becomes the bridge through which we traverse the abyss to the Divine who dwells in the deepest of our internal sanctuaries. It is the noise which are the barriers, which distract us and prevent us from making spaces and places for silence.

When create spaces of silence, we create a space for us to be ourselves and to journey to the inner sanctuaries within us where the Divine dwells. Being intentional about creating space in our lives for silence, is like honoring the Sabbath. It is radical and counter-cultural. It is about us creating margins in our life where we can just sit and be.

Some may find ti important to have a place, a room that is set apart for silence. I have the prayer and meditation garden in our backyard and I have a room in my house as well. However, the place, which for me, offers silence the loudest is the shower, where nobody and nothing disrupts me. It is in these places where we so often experience the opportunity to breathe, refresh, heal, and commune with our Higher Power.

Silence invites us to cross the bridge and sit in our inner sanctuary. When we cross into this inner world, we silence the noise of the world and open ourselves up to a time of discovery. Here in this silence we are blessed with the opportunity to connect with and fully experience our senses, feelings, deepest thoughts and values.

The bridge we cross is always present. However, we must be intentional about claiming the time to spend in our inner sanctuary, to crossing the bridge between the world and the dwelling of the Divine, and allowing ourselves to honor the wisdom which will flow in and through us. The space of silence to which we travel is ours and welcomes us in. We, however, must choose to spend time in this Holy place.
