Connecting the dots

April 15, 2024 Sharon Jacobson

Connecting the Dots

How do you do that she asked?
What?
See how x is related to y?
How do you do that?
As I sat and thought about it,
I realized I first learned to do it
with those connect the dot games
I used to do.
I loved watching the magic happen
as you figured out where to draw the line
in a way that allowed you to see something
more then just the dots.
There was so much more then just the dots.
There was a lesson focused on teaching me
how to connect the dots in my life.
When I draw upon that same imagination,
I begin to discover relationships
and meanings
and understandings that light up my world.
When I connect the dots today,
the world sheds light where I could not see.
and encourages me
to keep connecting the dots.

My Cloud of Witnesses

January 16, 2024 Sharon Jacobson

My Cloud of Witnesses

There are moments I feel as if
I am on this journey by myself.
Then I remember that I am surrounded
by a cloud of witnesses.
There are those who are walking with me,
my dearest of friends and my soulmate.
There are who walk behind me.
I may not be mindful of their presence at all times,
but they truly have my back
and advocate for me,
even when I am not aware.
There are those ahead of me,
who may not seem as if they are with me,
but they are clearing the path for me.
Finally, there are those who created the path
on which I am now walking.
They are the ones who fought for my rights
before I ever existed.
Together,
they are my cloud of witnesses,
who love and support me
in ways I may never understand,
or be mindful of,
but are ever present for me.

Appreciation

September 27, 2023 Sharon Jacobson

Appreciation

Every morning I write in my gratitude journal,
but one day I read what if you wrote about
more then what I was grateful for,
but why I was giving thanks.
What is it about that person, place, or thing
I appreciate.
What if I took a moment to tell each person
what I appreciated about them?
What if I lifted up a quality about them
that touched me and I valued?
I started with one of my paratransit drivers.
I told him I appreciated how
he always made me feel like more
than just a passenger.
He always asks about my life and my family.
I told him what I appreciated about him and
this husky man reached over
with tears in his eyes
and hugged me.
His response made me realize
expressing our appreciation,
not only touches others
but it touches us.
It helps us not only give thanks
but think about why we do.
It helps us deepen our connections
with others and with ourselves.

Rituals

June 29, 2020 Sharon Jacobson

As I called a friend
to sing her Happy Birthday
I remembered why rituals are so important.
Rituals are like a thread.
They connect us to our past,
enrich our present,
and tie us to the future.
Rituals bring us together,
they help us celebrate
who we are,
what we believe,
where we come from,
and where we are heading
Rituals
remind us to gather with those we love,
those who are important,
those we have things in common with.
Rituals
tear down the walls that separate us
build bridges to unite us
and bring us peace.
Rituals
bring to the center
of our thinking
reminders of what is important
in our lives.
This is why we are intentional
about celebrating
rituals
