The various forms of devotion

June 7, 2015 Sharon Jacobson

Dear Ultimate Consciousness,

The past few days I have been thinking about all the ways devotion takes form in my life. Today’s thought for the day seems to capture the essence of what I have been feeling. I have been thinking about how I practice devotion to the Ultimate in my life and how I practice devotion to my own personal self-development and to my relationship with those I love.

I guess it really hit me last night when I was talking about my relationship with you at the spiritual journaling workshop. I have been using the phrase I picked up from Doreen Virtue’s book Assertiveness Training for Earth Angels and telling people I am employed by God Inc. I love the understanding that comes from knowing you hired me to do specific things here on earth and it is in the process of doing so that I am able to practice and experience devotion in my life.

Everything in my life is an opportunity to practice my devotion, not just to you, but also to my evolving into the best version of me possible. When I can see the blessings in all situations and people, then I grow in my journey. For example, tonight we were given the wrong number for a phone meeting. So rather than let it frustrate me, I remembered to give thanks for playbacks so I could listen to what I missed. I gave thanks for the power of breathing, which kept me calm, and the knowledge that it was all as it should be. I gave thanks for speakerphone capability so Zoe and I could both listen, when she could not be connected. I gave thanks because I know that you provided a way for us to ignite our passion and commitment.

As I watched Zoe weeding in the garden this weekend, I was reminded of how devoted you are to us. You are constantly working in and through us removing that which is weeds in our spiritual garden, so our ability to grow and evolve is ongoing.

As I think about all I accomplish each day, I am reminded how you seem to make the time in the day expand to accommodate all that NEEDS to be done. I remember a story called Joshua in which he stops when people are in need, but always seemed to get all his carving and sculpting done. This is how I feel, when I stop to be of service to others, you somehow make the next thing on my to do list take less time than it should have.

Every time I choose to use my walker and build my body, it is an act of devotion. It is about my devotion to caring for the body you gave me, but also about being devoted to my own health and well-being. Every choice I make in my life about what I listen to, what I think, what I allow to move in and through me is about my devotion to my own transformation and to honoring the light and love you are surrounding me with each day. It is about me making choices to surround myself with sounds and scents that are uplifting and empowering, rather than negative and harmful. Every time I choose to eat or drink something, or not eat or drink something I am making choices that ultimately affect my ability to be in your presence and to be mindful of your guidance in all I do. So when I choose to eat a small bowl of nonfat yogurt vs a small bowl of ice cream, I honor you as I work to release the excess fat I have been carrying with me for many years in my life. When I choose to drink water and eat fresh fruits and vegetables, I am expressing my devotion to myself and to you.

One of the things I have come to realize is that I am always working with or for you. I was talking to someone today and she told me that I just exude my passion for you and my passion to be of service. It was a reminder that every moment of every day is an opportunity for me to express my devotion to you. My life is a spiritual practice of devotion and it is one I am becoming increasingly aware of and devoted to continuing.

Always,

Your humble employee.
