The E Words

April 3, 2026 Sharon Jacobson

It’s Easter this Sunday,
but to be honest,
all I have been able to think about
is the total eclipse of the sun.
So I sit here and reflect on the E words – easter and eclipse.
they are the markers of a cycle
that seems unrelated, but
they are about darkness and light.
they are about despair and hope,
they are about the triumph of light
over the temporary darkness which comes with the Eclipse.
Eclipses, albeit infrequent, come and go
and it is in the midst of the darkness
that we can prepare for its return.
in the midst of the death and the darkness
we prepare for the return of the light.
We die
just to be reborn.
We do this all the time,
our cells die and are regenerated.
parts of us die, only to come back transformed.
Eclipses are a time for change.
we so often underestimate the power
of what happens in the dark.
But it is our time in the darkness of the womb
that we prepare to be reborn
and walk in the light
Eclipses enable us to go through
and then with a quantum leap
move to a higher place in our journey.
It is not the e words themselves
which is so important.
It is about yet one more word
evolve,
because in the midst of all the e words
if we are not evolving,
then we are revolving.
so let us evolve
as we move through all the eclipses in our lives
the cycles of the Easter season
and the journey we call life.

Opposites

Opposites

We are taught to think
we are either or
but what if we are
both/and.
What if like a bird
we need both wings to fly?
What if we are supposed to embrace
the masculine and feminine within us?
What if we are supposed to embrace
the light and the dark?
Do we even understand one,
without the other?
Being biracial, I am not
black or white
but me, black and white.
What if the universe created opposites
so we could learn from the other?
What if opposites were not meant to divide,
but unify?
What if opposites could help each other
see and build bridges, rather then walls.
What if we made room at the table for all,
instead of separating the thems from the thems.
What if opposites are not opposites
but just reflections of itself?
