Reflections from the Sick Bed

March 28, 2013 Sharon Jacobson

As I am still sick, this week’s reflection will be quite short. When it comes to food, I have always enjoyed serving others. However, this week with both of us sick and hosting a contagious virus, which attacks the vocal chords, eating or cooking has been the last thing on my mind. What we have most wanted to do is sleep. At the same time, we knew that in order to get healthy we must drink plenty of fluids and eat something, at least some soup, as well as get plenty of rest. Unfortunately, as some of you may understand when you feel sick nothing tastes good. For Zoe, not even her go to foods like potato chips or bagels and cream cheese tasted good. For me, not even my favorite soups tasted good. What I did like about soup was that it was warm and felt good going down my throat.

What has meant the most to us this week, while I have not had the energy to cook anything, has been the love and support of friends. One of the things I have learned this week is how to ask for what we need. With me not able to drive and both of us sick and contagious, going to the store was not an option. So we learned to ask for what we needed, cat food for the boys, cough drops, tea, chips, bread, soup, juice and a few other things. We are so grateful for those who left bags on our front porch to assist us in our journey to wellness. It has always been important to support those I love who are sick or healing, so this was my opportunity to experience what it feels like to be the recipient of these acts of kindness. I know it is said that it is better to give then to receive, but as the Hebrew Bible also says for everything, there is a season. I guess this week has been our season to receive.
