July is National Picnic Month. It is a month to celebrate and share time with family and friends. As I goofed around to see if I could find any spiritual writings about God and Picnics, I stumbled upon this song called God Shuffled His Feet by Crash Test Dummies.
After seven days
He was quite tired, so God said:
“Let there be a day
Just for picnics, with wine and bread.”
He gathered up some people He had made,
Created blankets and laid back in the shade.
What if God’s idea of honoring the Sabbath was to gather together with loved ones and have a picnic. What if we took a day each week, month, or year, to rest and gather with friends to picnic with wine and bread.
Picnicking is a time for hanging out. It is a time to breath, literally and figuratively. It is a to spend time with our Higher Power and anyone else we choose to have fun, intentionally reboot, and surround ourselves with the blessing of love, friendship, laughter, and memories.
A picnic has untapped potential because it invites us to leap over daily obstacles and experience the blessing of being with friends. A picnic can become a pinnacle of joy when we just hang out with our Higher Power, amazing food and people. A picnic is like a blank screen, we transform it into a time of just being, a time to create memories and meals with those we love. We all need a breather now and again. So pack your picnic basket, yoga mat or tailgate supplies, and shuffle your feet, while God shuffles his, and hang out with those you love.
