More than a Perk
Seven years ago I made the decision to become a Pampered Chef consultant and see if it would be a good fit for me. I figured I had nothing to lose and so I did. As I was once told, the worst-case scenario was that I wound up with a box of wonderful. About the same time, I read a quote by Jeff Bezos which read, “The common question that gets asked in business is, 'why?' That's a good question, but an equally valid question is, 'why not?'” I did not have an answer to why not, so I decided to give it a chance. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I have made in my life.
There are so many perks that come with being a consultant, especially if you love Pampered Chef, but the greatest perk was not one anyone told me about. Rather, it was something I experienced. I met my soul friend. Edward C. Sellner described a soul friend as “someone with whom we can share our greatest joys and deepest fears, confess our worst sins and most persistent faults, clarify our highest hopes and perhaps most unarticulated dreams.” Up until I met Eileen Hooper McConville, I thought my only soul friend was my wife.
The funny thing was that I used to think she did not like me because that is what someone had told me. Then the Universe showed its sense of humor and we did a vending event together. Since then, she and I have been virtually inseparable. We rarely see each other physically anymore, but we talk almost daily. For the longest time we introduced ourselves as our PC wives. Then we realized it was more than that, it was as if we were sisters, but even that did not seem to fit. When I read this quote, I shared it with her and we both agreed, this was it – soul friends.
For the last 7 years we have developed a relationship that is hard to explain and it all happened because I said why not to this opportunity. I have earned a lot of perks the last seven years, but the most valuable to me is meeting my soul friend. I am eternally grateful for the journey we have been on and there is not a day I do not give thanks for her presence in my life.
