Becoming Beautiful

August 4, 2020 Sharon Jacobson

I used to think I was ugly.
that was the message I got from society
because I am fat,
because I am old
because I am not a gurly girl.
because I was looking at society’s mirror,
and not God’s.
It was my skinny friends
who began teaching  me I was beautiful.
It was when a dear friend was moving
and she wanted a picture of the gang.
four skinny girls and me.
I wanted to hide
and they wanted me smack dab in the middle.
What they said was my beauty
would last long past theirs
because mine was internal.
A friend of mine and I were talking
and her words struck me.
“Your poetry makes you beautiful.”
it’s not my poems themselves,
but what happens within me
as I write them.
Then I began to realize
that it is not what I create
whether it is a meal,
or a blanket,
or a poem
that makes me beautiful,
but the process of creating,
that helps me become beautiful
It is the time with the master of creating
which gives me time to learn and grow,
to evolve and transform.
to become more beautiful
and to let that beauty shine
through me into the world.
What do you do to become beautiful

Looking In, Not Out

October 1, 2019 Sharon Jacobson

I have long been taught
to look for the Divine
in the world.
I have looked for the Divine in
people,
places,
and things.

What if instead of looking
for the Divine in what is
outside, we looked for the
outside in us.
What if I looked for that person
in me,
that place
in me,
that thing
in me.

What if I looked for
the sky in me,
the sea in me,
the trash in me,
the homeless in me,
the flower in me,
the artwork in me?
What would I see
in me?

What Makes us Beautiful?

A few weeks ago, I received an email from my friend Jane Patterson, who lives in Australia. I like to say that Jane is one of the most beautiful spirits I will probably never meet. Jane told me about a woman, Natalie McComas, who was doing a photographic series called Beautiful in this Skin. According to Natalie, this series “portrays subjects with dramatic, visible birthmarks and explores the effects this has had on their lives and psyches. This series celebrates these unique skin formations whilst also inspiring those, who may have a similar condition, to feel special and beautiful in their own skin.”[1]

T is for Toxins

April 16, 2013 Sharon Jacobson
toxins.jpg

There are two sources of spiritual toxins in our lives: internal and external. It is easy to understand how internal toxic cleanup is a process. We can understand that stalking, as I wrote about last week, is a process whereby our inner jaguar preys out the internal toxins, or parasites as don Miguel Ruiz would refer to them, and ruthlessly remove them. We then go back and seek to understand the roots of how that toxin came in and remove our attachment to it.
