Memories of a Teacher

August 29, 2022 Sharon Jacobson

Memories of a Teacher

“Write about bridges.”
This was one of those powerful
life changing messages
given to me by the late
Rev Dr James Evans.
My heart still trembles
as I type his name.
He was the one who made me
fall in love with theology.
He told me to find myself
and my way of interpreting scripture
that built bridges.
He challenged me to read scripture
for the stories of bridge builders.
The people who were not one tribe or the other,
the people who told stories about building bridges, and
the people who knew about the vertical
and the horizontal beams of the cross.
He encouraged me to be a liberator,
one who both taught about how the perfect form of slavery
was not even realizing you were enslaved
and a liberator from those
invisible shackles which enslaved.
He taught me to own my Sophia
and created spaces for me,
a humble m.div student
to teach d. min students
in a course on activism and advocacy.
I know I am not the only one he liberated.
He did more than write about
black liberation theology,
he created keys
which unlocked so many of our gifts.
I know he unlocked many of mine.

100% of God our donations go to support our ability to provide low and no cost offerings to those seeking to grow and evolve spiritually.

Inspirations

December 3, 2019 Sharon Jacobson

Every month,
every day
someone leaves us
to live in a different space.
Friends, family members, and furbabies
have died before us

The older we get,
the more we experience people
 leaving before us, and
leaving us behind.

I miss those who have gone,
but in their own ways
they live on.
They exist in our memories.
Their spirits exist in our remembering them.
Their wisdom and lessons taught
continue to inspire us
in this day and those to come.

Saying Goodbye

May 13, 2019 Sharon Jacobson

It was almost 30 years ago
when I bought that black sweater.
Over the years,
it has kept me warm,
gone on dates,
seen me through
good times and bad.
My black sweater stayed
with me longer than
some friends.

Then the day came,
that I had to say goodbye.
I was so worn out and tattered
I could no longer wear it
not even at home.
There was something about saying
goodbye
to this sweater that had seen me through
30 years of life.

So as I prepared to let it go
I took a moment to give thanks
for all the dates it had been on with me
for the days it had kept me warm,
for the tears and the laughter it has shared, and
for so much more then
I could remember
or I could put into words.

As we release the old,
may we remember to honor
all it has seen us through
and give thanks for the ways
we have been served and blessed

Memories

April 29, 2019 Sharon Jacobson

We all have memories.
Each day is an opportunity to make more
Even if you do not like
the ones of the past.
Today you have a chance
to create new ones.
You have the chance to create
memories
which will help you live well,
to stay well
and remember well.

You have the chance to create
memories
which will help you live the
life you are wanting to live.
You have the chance to create
memories
which will bring you one step
closer to the goals you are setting
for yourself.
You have the chance to help others
create memories,
which will help them on their journey’s

You may not feel as if you had power
over the memories of the past,
but you do the ones starting right now.
Even in the painful ones you can find
blessings in the memories and
gifts which helped you grow and evolve.

Hold on to the memories.
There are those I have lost
in my journey.
Once you let them go
they seem to disappear.
So hold on to them
and create new ones
Memories are powerful.
