The Mundane
Thich Nhat Hanh got me in the habit
of giving thanks for the mundane,
like turning on the water
washing my hands,
pumping gas,
making tea,
washing dishes,
or opening a window.
There is so much more to the mundane,
like I can only wash my hands
because of the sink
and the pipes
and the plumbing
and the water system
and everything that happened
to bring the water to my hands.
The mundane goes unnoticed
until something happens,
like the day I woke up and
I could not do the mundane.
I could not go to the bathroom
and at the hospital they said
you are in acute renal failure,
and then the miracle happened.
Over a 3 day period,
I went from being in ICU
to being home and healthy
and everything restored.
Today going to the bathroom
is far from mundane.
It reminds me of the miracles
the Ultimate performs in our lives
but we do not see them
because they are mundane.
