Value

April 17, 2023 Sharon Jacobson

Value

I used to think I had to be of value
to be loved.
Then I realized I am of value
for one very simple reason;
God created me.
God creates value.
God’s love created me
and in doing so made me of value.
The same is true for you.
We are each created
by the one who loved us
and makes us of value
to those who know us
and those who don’t.
Value is not about how much you have.
It is not about your possessions,
or net worth.
Value is about the love in your life.
It is the people who love you that make you invaluable.
It is the love you create in your life and
the love which created you
which makes you of value.
Your value doesn’t come from what you own,
but from the love
which flows to you and through you.

Listening to the Garbage

May 4, 2022 Sharon Jacobson

Listening to the Garbage

How you see the least of thee
is how you see me.
I know it’s a slightly different version
then most have heard,
but this is one of my Bubby wisdoms.
She taught me to value the garbage
as much as I valued the groceries in my pantry.
Each she taught me has a message,
a piece of wisdom,
a lesson about life,
and a gift for me to carry forward.
Does it really belong in the garbage
or is there still potential in it.
As I watch chefs increasingly focusing
on reducing food costs
by using all of the plant
and not just the obvious parts
I remember this Bubby lesson.
I give thanks for the leaves
and the peels
and the nutrition and flavor
each brings to the plate.
I have come to think of the garbage
as offerings of gratitude
for all that contributed to my
sustenance and well-being.
How do you think about yours?

Messages of Hope and Renewal

March 21, 2022 Sharon Jacobson

Messages of Hope and Renewal

“Thank you,” she said,
this stranger at the store,
who in all honesty,
I have no memory of ever seeing.
Apparently,
years ago I had seen her,
on a day she was feeling hopeless
and considering suicide.
She said I had given her
a message of hope and renewal.
I don’t remember what I said or did,
but what I do know is this.
The Ultimate uses us as
messengers of hope and renewal,
in ways we may not remember,
but to those who need to know
that today is a new day,
every day is a new day,
they are loved,
valued,
wanted,
and make the world
a better place.
Her words made me wish
I had been a messenger for
friends of mine who
took their own lives.
Then I remember being told
that I gave one of my friends
their last happy day in this world
while feeding her face
with lasagna and orange brownies.
I had no phone service
the day she died,
or I would have reached out
and been a messenger of
hope and renewal.
Each day now,
I strive to make myself available to others
to offer a simple,
but life changing message
of hope and renewal.

Crumbs

March 1, 2022 Sharon Jacobson

Crumbs

I stared at the plate
and all that was left
were the crumbs of
my grandmother’s cake.
Her cakes were one of those
that made you not want to miss
a single crumb.
I was a child,
but I remember her
taking the crumbs
and putting them in a container.
She never wasted a crumb.
She would then
take her collection of crumbs
and combine them with a few other ingredients
and they would become this crumb topping
on her amazing crumb cake.
Her crumb cake
reminds me that even that
which goes unused,
that which others consider useless,
are of great value.
Had those crumbs been eaten,
we would not have had her cake
and I would not have these memories
of crumbs.

You are somebody

January 9, 2014 Sharon Jacobson

I was having a conversation with someone recently and they talked about how they were somebody because they were raised in the “right” school and in the “right” neighborhood. This made me wonder what if you did not go to the “right” school. What if you did not grow up in the “right” neighborhood? What if you grew up on the “wrong” side of the tracks? Does one context make you somebody and the other make you a nobody?

This whole conversation got me thinking about how much of our society is constructed in a way that we value one difference over another. As sociologist Allan Johnson argued, it is not that difference in and of itself is bad, but the valuation of one difference over another. The contexts of our life (where we go to school, work, grew up, etc.) should have nothing to do with our value as a human being. Society may have constructed beliefs that one is better then the other, but that does not make it true. It is only true if you agree it is true.
