Connect the Dots

May 5, 2025 Sharon Jacobson

Connect the Dots

Twinkle, twinkle little stars,
we used to sing as we stared at them,
my parents and I.
Connect the dots
That is how you see the wonders.
You think you just see little stars,
but there are constellations
you see when you connect them.
Connect the dots
they would say
as I stared at a sheet of dots
then, like the stars,
I would connect them
and see the wonder before me.
Connect the dots
it is what I still do
When I do I see I am
part of something larger
and like as a child I see something
deeply wondrous
all because I remember
to connect the dots.

Mystery

February 8, 2021 Sharon Jacobson

Mystery

Twinkle, twinkle little star
how I wonder what you are.
There is something about no knowing,
about wondering,
about the mysteries of life,
which make us feel uncomfortable,
especially as adults.
As a child
I loved mysteries,
I loved wondering about things I did not know.
I loved reading them,
with all their twists and turns,
with clues being revealed along the way.
Life is a mystery.
We do not know where
we are being led
or what will happen.
So let’s just enjoy the ride,
pay attention to the clues,
and slide home at the end,
having lived the mystery of life
to its fullest.

Mountains out of Molehills

December 15, 2020 Sharon Jacobson

Mountains out of Molehills

Twinkle, twinkle little star
how I wonder where you are.
That is the first thing that comes to my mind
when I think of wonder.
It is the shear feeling of wonder
that transforms the way we can
see the world.
It is what allowed me as a child
to see a mountain
where there was nothing more than a molehill.
it is what enables us to look
at everyday things
and see them as part of
something bigger,
something Divine,
something spiritual and
enables us to see it as a mountain
and not just a molehill.
May we see the mountains
and gasp at their amazement
and always wonder
where is that star.

Open My Eyes

September 26, 2017 Sharon Jacobson
wonder.jpg

Years ago, the spiritual director I was working with talked with me about a Japanese form of self-defense called aikido. She talked with me about how when we are surprised and thrown off guard, we want to fight or free. We want to narrow our world and our vision to create this protective force around us. Rather than do so, she suggested I practice what she called “soft eyes.” Practicing soft eyes meant that I challenged myself to expand rather than contract my view of the world.

When we open our eyes, and allow ourselves to see the greatness of the world and the grace which surrounds us, it softens our heart, mind, and soul. Rather than want to resist or run when taken by surprise, practicing wonder allows us to open ourselves up to the great mystery of the world.

NINE WAYS OF OBSERVING

January 29, 2015 Sharon Jacobson

I was first exposed to the writings of a woman who goes by the name of Starhawk when I began reading about ecofeminism. Her writings have always intrigued me because they challenged me to pay attention to the physical landscape that surrounds me in new ways. In one of her books, which I read almost 10 years ago, she outlined nine ways of observing the spiritual in the physical. My meditations this week, have led me back to this book and the lessons it taught me about paying attention. So I thought I would share a few excerpts from her book this week.
