Things That Don’t Suck
I remember it like it was yesterday.
This woman, at least 20 years older than me
offered to help me get something
I could not reach from my wheelchair.
Then she said it,
your life must suck.
If I had to use a wheelchair,
I would wish I was dead.
I remember telling her
it was a good thing she was not me.
It is amazing
how people think of situations as sucking,
but those who are going through
say it’s a challenge,
but it doesn’t suck.
Losing the feeling in my right side
doesn’t suck,
My wife and so many of my friends
being diagnosed with cancer,
doesn’t’ suck.
Did they want it - no,
Would they want to go through it again – no,
Would I – no,
Were there moments I did not want to go through
yes,
the moments may have sucked,
but my life doesn’t
it sucked when I failed a test,
but having earned 4 degrees
and several certifications,
that moment sucked,
but what came from it
and out of it did not.
Do I like having to have surgery and biopsies
every 5 years – no,
But I am still here
and my life doesn’t suck
Do I like having two degenerative diseases?
No, but I am still here
and my life doesn’t suck.
What can suck in life is our attitude
but we can keep it from sucking
by changing our perspective.
Life doesn’t suck,
but our attitude towards it can.
