My Survival Kit
My computer had died,
and I found myself on my own deserted island.
what do I do when
my transportation off the island is gone,
when my technology is shut down,
when I can’t write a poem on my desktop
or enter what I am grateful for,
what is inspiring me,
what I intend to create,
what brought me joy
because it had died,
after a good life
and having given me
a space to write,
reflect, and share with others.
My computer was where I began each day
reflecting and releasing,
giving thanks in my gratitude journal,
reflecting on what was inspiring me,
identifying on what I intended to manifest,
and remembering what had bought me joy.
I could still think them and remembered
I had paper to write on,
and then I remembered
how I had wanted to start saying thank you,
not just in my journal,
but to people.
So I found thank you cards
and began making a list
of 365 people I need to say thank you too.
one a day for the next year.
I realized this was one practice I could
put in my spiritual survivors toolkit.
Whether I am in the comfort of my home,
or on a castaway island
I could tell people thank you.
I could ground myself by noticing
5 things I see,
4 things I can feel,
3 things I can hear,
2 things I can smell
and 1 thing I can taste.
I can take time to breathe,
remembering how to do each step
to the count of 4,
inhale, hold, exhale, hold,
1, 2, 3, and 4
and then standing under a shower,
real or imaginary and allow
the tension to be rinsed off
and wisdom to wash over me.
I could remember mantras
like I am grounded, clear and adaptable
or I am loving, I am peaceful and I am kind.
i could pack mini sabbaticals
as I gave myself time to breathe
with each task I completed.
Then I looked at my altar and remembered
I have so many reminders
of what I value in life,
the positive energy which surrounds me
and that which brings me peace.
All of these are always with me
packed in my spiritual tool kit
no matter whether my computer
is working or not,
my tools travel with me
and reside within me.
