Bridges

June 28, 2024 Sharon Jacobson

Bridges

As I look out into this world
I see so many who are building walls
not between countries,
but between humanity.
We pit people against each other.
We pit families against each other
constructing walls of war
and hatred.
We stop learning how to work with each other
and learn from each other.
Walls divide,
Bridges unite.
They bring people together
in places and spaces
where we listen to each other,
learn from each other,
grow with each other.
Bridges enable us to learn
not just about each other
but how the Divine is working
in and through each of us.
Bridges not only erase the excluded
but deepen our foundation
with the Divine.
Bridges enable us to feast together
even when it is not the same meal.
We drink together,
even if not from the same fountain.
We all live in the same world and
share the same problems.
Bridges enable us to talk together,
understand each other,
help each other
and be inclusive of each other.

Loving the Leper Within

March 18, 2022 Sharon Jacobson

Loving the Leper Within

I remember reading a writing from
St Francis of Assisi who wrote about
“loving the leper within us.”
It took me a while to comprehend
I must do more then love what I like about myself,
I must love what I don’t like.
I must love the parts of me
I want to hide,
I am ashamed of,
I want to deny,
I want to ignore.
When I learn to love
the leper within myself,
then I learn to love
the ones others view as lepers
around me.
It allows me to show compassion to all.
It enables me to open my heart
and my table
to those who society has labeled the other,
the least of thee,
for those who have been excluded and
those who fear I will not embrace them.
When I learn to embrace all of me,
then I have learned how to
embrace all of you .

When I was not enough

January 1, 2016 Sharon Jacobson

So I have had to laugh at this whole notion of hospitality. I have been intentional about creating a space here at Inspiritual and in our home where all feel welcome. We have done this in part because we have all know what it felt like when we were not enough of something or too much of something to feel welcome and accepted by a movement, community, or other group. Years ago, I wrote a poem called I am enough where I spoke out about all the areas of my life I had allowed myself to feel marginalized and excluded by others words and behaviors.

I knew I was never excluded by the one who created me and has loved me my entire existence, however, there have been times when other humans have reminded me that I am on earth and not in heaven. Sometimes the rejection, the inhospitality has come in the most unexpected of places.
