Big Magic

April 24, 2026 Sharon Jacobson

Big Magic

Whenever I get stuck or scared,
I cuddle up and listen to the start
of Elizabeth Gilbert’s Big Magic,
not because of her,
but because she reintroduces me to
Jack Gilbert
who asked a student,
and indirectly me,
do you have the courage to write your story.
It reminds me to have the courage.
It reminds me that my writing
is my success,
it is not the awards or the name recognition,
but the courage to be authentic,
and to write the meditations of my heart
and in doing so I experience it,
what Gilbert called
the big magic

Thank You Jack Gilbert

Thank You Jack Gilbert

I will never meet you,
at least not in this realm,
because you have long transcended.
Like me, you had your challenges and obstacles,
and you wrote your poetry in private.
You were about encouraging people
to step outside their comfort zone
to risk delight
and experience gladness
no matter what challenges life presented.
You lived in a world of your own creating
leaving behind a legacy
of living with authenticity,
of having the courage to write from one’s soul
enabling your words to be a way of writing back
against the ruthlessness in this world,
and with those who too had the
wisdom and courage to be brave.
Bravery,
perhaps it would have been your next collection.
Bravery, you would say
is what enables us to climb our way
to the depths and heights of our abilities.
Bravery,
would introduce us
to a world of marvel
and the mysteries of life.
Without it,
we would never know the world
as the Ultimate sought for us to know it.
There are moments
I wish I had a teacher like Jack Gilbert
and then I realize I do
and he and all the others
the Ultimate has sent to me
are ongoing reminders
to have the courage
to keep writing
and enabling the treasures
that are buried within me to flow forth.
Thank you Jack Gilbert
for always encouraging me in your own way
to be brave.
