Look for the Blessings

July 18, 2024 Sharon Jacobson

Look for the Blessings

Look for the blessings,
my Bubby would say.
No matter what you are going through,
look for the blessings.
Life is filled with challenges,
always will be.
In the midst of them,
look for the blessings
and know you will be okay.
Things can look difficult and dangerous,
but when I look for the blessings,
I see them as gemstones,
as diamonds
not shards of glass.
Things will happen
which may seem unpleasant
but they are blessings in disguise.
I can only see them,
when I look for them.
I am looking for my blessings
Are you looking for yours?

My Legacy – Beginning

May 6, 2024 Sharon Jacobson

My Legacy – Beginning

I listen to my friends
as they talk about their families
and the legacy they are leaving behind.
It causes me to stop and think about
what my legacy is.
What is it I am leaving behind.
I will leave Nick behind and
he is a legacy of the transformative power of unconditional love.
Being his mother has not always been easy.
There are days that have been filled with joy,
and others filled with pain,
but the one thing I am leaving in him
is knowing how the love we share
has transformed his life.
I hope, however, that there is more to my legacy
then what I have bequeathed him.
I think about this often.
What will people say about me
or remember about me when I am gone.
Perhaps it is time for me to dive within
and write the story of my life.
Maybe its time for me to write
about what is important to me and why.
What do my words,
my writings,
my poems
say about me and my legacy.
What is the wisdom I want to leave behind?
What is the advice I want to pass on?
What are the blessings that have changed my life?
Maybe these words are just the beginning
as I reflect on my spiritual legacy
and the gifts I bequeath to the world.

The Day You Went Home

November 21, 2023 Sharon Jacobson

The Day You Went Home

My Bubby used to always tell me
Look for the blessing, in the midst of the storm
and then you know you will be okay.
You fell today, but it was different.
Normally you would fall
and get back up,
but today you fell and just laid there.
That is when I knew
you were ready to cross the rainbow bridge.
I picked you up and
held you in my arms.
I knew you were tired.
I knew you were ready to go home.
I knew it was time before I even called the vet.
As I sat there and held you,
I was grateful I was here.
The thought of you laying there alone
was more then I could handle.
I may not have been there
when you took your last breath
but I was there
when you took your last fall
Together we were both there for you
on the day you said goodbye.
We are both filled with the blessings
you bought into our life.
We do not have to look for them,
they are written on our hearts.
We are better people because
you came into our lives.
Our hearts are breaking
because we had the blessing of loving you.

Beauty

November 9, 2023 Sharon Jacobson

Beauty

One day you will be beautiful,
that is what she said to me.
She had a litany of reasons
she saw me as ugly.
Her reasons really do not matter,
what matters is I know I am beautiful
just as I am.
I was created by
and in the image of
the Ultimate.
What makes anyone beautiful
is not necessarily what is on the outside,
but the beauty that radiates from within.
Have I met people that the world would view
as ugly?  Sure.
However, I know there is more to them
then what is on the outside.
I look for the beauty within everyone I meet.
Are they loving?
Do they treat people with dignity and respect?
If nothing else,
they are blessed,
because they too were created in the image of the Ultimate.
We were all created to represent
the diversity of life.
Beauty is
in the eyes of the beholder.
I will look for your beauty,
regardless of whether you look for mine.

Bless Them

October 9, 2023 Sharon Jacobson

Bless Them

Every morning I write in my gratitude journal
and I give thanks for at least 5 things in my life
I am grateful for/
However, this morning, it dawned on me,
that I never ask for those people, places and things
to be blessed.
There are so many ways and situations,
that my life has taught me wisdom.
My wisdom has come through the good times and the bad,
my wins and my losses,
my illnesses,
that which has bought me joy
and that which has reduced me to tears.
Everything and everyone
I have met on my journey
has helped me to understand myself
and life.
I have been blessed with the opportunity
to sit at the table of the included and the excluded,
the friend and the adversary,
and with my parents and those who call me mom.
So now I begin a new habit of not only giving thanks each day,
but asking the Ultimate
to bless them
for their part in my journey.

Joyous

October 18, 2022 Sharon Jacobson

Joyous

Rather then being jealous of others,
I am spending my time being joyous.
Joyous for them and their blessings.
joyous for their gifts and talents.
Joyous for all that is going well with them.
My being joyous is not just about them,
but me.
Being joyous for others
gives me joy in my hard times.
Celebrating others
helps me celebrate myself.
Judy’s passion for advocacy reminds me
I am a fighter and can slay the storms.
Eileen’s going to concerts and loving music
reminds me I can go places virtually and enjoy life
even when I can’t go physically.
So many of my friends make me joyous.
I would much rather be joyous with them
then jealous of them.

See the Blessings

January 31, 2022 Sharon Jacobson

See the Blessings

I love Bubby wisdom,
at least that is what I call it.
It is those pearls of wisdom,
left to me by my Bubby,
who passed over decades ago.
She would say Sara Bella,
my Hebrew name,
when you can see the good
in a bad situation,
then you know you will be ok.
She would remind me to always
look for the good
in all situations.
No matter what it was,
I was to look for the good.
So as I have lost so many people
from my life,
I have learned to remember
I have one more person
looking out for me from above.
The blessings are there,
in the midst of all situations.
Sometimes it is in the midst of them
that we find the blessings and goodness.
If it were not for injuring my back,
I would never have met so many people
who also use wheelchairs
and see me as someone who can relate to them.
If it weren’t for the storms,
I would not have the experience
of sailing through them.
It is not about the challenges
it is about how we journey through them.
I am grateful for the challenges in my life
they have helped me
grow, evolve, and transform.
They are what has helped me
to see the blessings
each and every day of my life.

Blessings

April 6, 2020 Sharon Jacobson

So many are complaining
about the events of our life,
but what if instead we gave thanks
and saw this as a blessing.
What if we were grateful
for the blessings
which we are gaining
from this event.

What if saw all wisdom
as a blessing.
What if we saw all of life
as a blessing.
What if we saw both
health and the virus
as a blessing.

This season has offered
us the blessing of coming to know
ourselves and each other.
This season has offered
us the blessing of
a deeper understanding of life.

All of life
offers us blessings
of wisdom,
of understanding
and of love.
May we find the blessings
in all of life and
give thanks for the blessings

In the Image of God

January 7, 2019 Sharon Jacobson
god.jpg

I was five
and saw this woman
who I told my Bubby
was so ugly.
She is beautiful
in God’s eyes.
She is a creation
of the divine,
she said.

Beauty is not
in the eyes of
the beholder
Beauty is in
the wisdom of
the creator

You look like a whale
the little boy said.
Thank you, for seeing,
the grace in all of
God’s creations,
I replied

Beauty is not about
what we have been
told is beauty.
Beauty is about
the ability to
see the Divine
in all of creation.

Today may we
seek the beauty
in all
May we remember
we are all created
in the image of God.

Gratitude is __________

November 2, 2015 Sharon Jacobson

On November 1st, our Love and inspiration gathering had a powerful discussion about gratitude. We talked about how gratitude, when practiced, has the potential to be the tapestry of our lives. Everything we give thanks for leads to something else. For example, we talked about giving thanks for indoor plumbing, which led to us giving thanks for our showers, our toilets, our dishwashers, all the appliances that use water. This led to us giving thanks for those that have given to ensure water flows into our homes, which led to a discussion of how often we take things for granted. It is not until our water is shut off for some reason, albeit temporarily that we realize how grateful we are for having it and when it is restored, we are immensely grateful. How rarely do we think about all the people in this world who cannot just get up and get a glass of water? Those who do not have access to clean water? Those who have to walk for miles to even bring water to their families. It is when we stop and follow the thread that we begin to have a deeper understanding not only of what we are grateful for, but why we appreciate it as much as we do.

The Word is Ours

January 13, 2015 Sharon Jacobson

This quote from Lao Tsu brought me back to my childhood and all of a sudden, I can hear myself as a child singing, “She’s got the whole world in her hands. She’s got the whole wide world in her hands. She’s got the whole wild world in her hands. She’s got the whole world in her hands.” Whenever my Bubby and I would sing this, she would remind me the Ultimate did not have a sex or a gender. The Divine could be male, female, and everything in between. Because of this, she would say, we could sing it she or he.

Perhaps more importantly, she would always use this song to remind me that when I kept the Ultimate close to me, then I would never lack for anything. She would remind me that the Divine would provide me with everything and anything I needed in my life and that I would never lack anything essential to my purpose in life.

Accept and Seek

May 27, 2014 Sharon Jacobson

Growing up, I remember my Bubby (Yiddish for grandmother), reminding me that there was a lesson hidden in everything I felt. Her advice was to accept the feeling and seek out the gift. This was true regardless of whether it was sadness, happiness, or something in between. She taught me to understand and see what I was feeling within the broader context of life. This was a lesson she taught me a few ways. One day, when I was sad she gave me a pinch of salt to eat. I remember needing to rinse my mouth out with water, for what seemed like forever. I had tried to spit it out; however, she would not let me. Later, she took the same amount of salt, sprinkled it on a burger, and had me eat it. As part of the burger, it tasted amazing and seemed to make the burger taste better. This lesson reminded me that everything is part of something bigger then what it appears to be.

I call this “game” my Bubby taught me, accept and seek.
