June 16, 1956
is the day I was born.
it was also the day
my birth mother and I
almost died as she tried
to bring me into this world.
With all the blessings in my life,
I realize that had I not survived,
it might have been a tragedy
or perhaps it would not have been
to those who did not want me
and a tragedy to those who did.
What I do know is this
to my parents who adopted and loved me,
they were grateful I survived.
for them, I made a difference
and for me, they did.
Then I think about all I have survived,
all the times I have not died,
the first time being in 1956
and I realize the best truly is yet to come.
I lived through a tragedy at birth,
it prepared me to be an overcomer
and to make the most of each moment,
each day,
and my life.
