Welcoming Babies
It has been almost three years now,
since I last held Mr Mittens in my arms.
it is a memory that still breaks open my heart.
I remember having to call Zoe to come home,
to call the veterinarian who had done
all he could do to help him and us,
and to hold this frail body that was so ready to go home.
And then we all cried.
His passing was not the first we had experienced,
and it may not be the last,
but for now it may be.
I remember the days we opened our hearts
and our doors to those no longer with us
Samantha,
Ralph,
Bo,
Tig
Merl,
Wally
and Mr Mittens.
They were more than furbabies
who filled our hearts with love.
They each were creations of the Ultimate
who came to us with a history
of not being wanted,
welcomed,
and sadly knowing what it was like
to be abandoned,
waiting for someone to really see them.
We saw more then their cuteness.
We saw those who just wanted
a family who would love them.
They wanted a family who would love them
with the same commitment,
we made to each other.
We too had experienced that pain.
We had each known what it was like
to have to wait
to find our forever home.
Then we found each other.
Since then we have done what we can
to open our hearts
and become a forever home
to those in need of love.
We know that it is more than
opening our hearts.
It is about providing a space
where those who find their way to us
can find the place to heal,
to learn to trust,
love, and heal
on a timeline
none of us have control over.
What we do have control over
is when we open our doors
and the unconditional love we offer,
while they learn to trust us enough
to offer it back.
