Write about this,
that is what my friend Laura said
as she sent me this photograph.
There is a poem in here for you.
I think there may be several,
The words I heard were
can you see it.
God is doing its’ thing here,
can you see it.
What I saw was the heart in the air.
the love that was coming out of nowhere.
How often do we not see it?
How often do we miss the miracles happening before us?
Are we present enough in this moment
to sense it, feel it, see it, hear it,
be mindful of it?
If Laura had not been present in that moment
that photo would not exist.
It does and as we stare at it
what can we see.
What it says to us today
is not the same as it will be tomorrow.
It's like reading a scripture.
It can speak to you differently each time you read it
because it is never the same life twice.
If we are not present,
we will never see it
and unlike what Laura saw
not all things can be captured
in a photograph
for her to tell me
write about this.

Label Free

Label Free

It was an exercise I gave my queer theory class one day.
Let’s be intentional about trying not to label this week.
Labeling, I explained
creates expectations which affect our vision
and change how we see things.
We see people as the label
not necessarily as they really are.

When I see you as your label
then there are things I think I know about you,
because you are everything I believe about that label
and I miss everything about you that is new and exciting and
you do the same with me.
When we build relationships based on labels
we are in relationship with our expectations,
we are in a relationship with the stories we create,
and only partially with the person for who they truly are.
What if we lived without labels.
If we learned to care about each other
not as a sex or a gender
or as a race or an ethnicity
or a sexuality or
a class
or any other label
that carries with it a story.
Would you see me differently?
Would I see you differently?
Would we see each other a greater clarity
and truer expression of who we were created to be?

Silence

Silence

Silence.
It is one of the nouns
I used to describe myself
to my students.
But why they always ask?
Why silence?
Are you a quiet person
or do you just like silence?
It is not so much about the silence of others,
but the silencing of my own brain and
of my heart.
When I silence myself,
I am able to hear the symphony
of the Ultimate which is everywhere
and playing every instrument.
I hear it in the opening and closing of doors.
I feel it when people reach out for help.
I hear it in the songs of the birds and
other animals in our environment.
I see it in the grass moving
even when I cannot see the breeze.
The Ultimate is in every moment
and always has a message for me.
It is only in my own silence
that I can hear it.

Seeing

Seeing

We never know when
we are making a difference.
it doesn’t take much.
sometimes we just have to be present
and let people know they are seen.
It can be as simple as the |
offering of a smile,
a compliment,
an affirmation,
or anything,
which makes people feel
you acknowledge them
and their value.
It is about seeing folks
and honoring their humanity.
It takes very little
to make most folks feel special.
We all want to know
we are seen
and appreciated
for who we are.

Talk to Me

When I find myself drawn to something,
I have to stop and listen,
because it is trying to
talk to me.

Anything that is alive
has the power and ability
to share a wisdom, lesson, and
talk to me.

The cracks in the driveway
drew me in one day and
between the cracks I saw the beauty
they were revealing to me.

I watched the birds as
they went from branch to branch
grabbing what they needed
telling me you have what you need

I sat in the sun
feeling the warmth wash over me
covering me like a blanket
telling me I am loved

All that is alive
is speaking to us
bringing us lessons
talking to us,
we just need to listen
