Nodding

August 22, 2022 Sharon Jacobson

Nodding

I was young when my Bubby
taught me to nod towards others.
She would say it’s how you show reverence.
It’s how you see the gifts in them.
Then she taught me to nod to things
that were gifts to me.
So I nod at my computer in the morning
to my desk,
to my phone,
to my computer
to my wheelchair,
and to the appliances
which fill my kitchen.
Today my students
nodded at me in through their
first day of class reflections.
Their nodding at me
reminded me of all the authors
who have come before me and
whose work I have used in my own writing.
It is through my citations that I nod at them
and recognize the gifts others have shared,
the reverence I have for them and their wisdom
and how citing authors in my work
is yet one more way for me to nod,
give thanks
and honor their presence.

To Those I Should Thank

To Those I Should Thank

Thanks.
It is easy for me to thank the ones I love,
the ones who support me,
surround me with unconditional love,
grace,
mercy,
and affirmations.
it is easy to say thank you
to the ones I want to thank.
Then there are those
who I jokingly say have saved me
so much money.
They are the ones
I would prefer not to thank
but I am truly grateful for their being
these heat sinking missles
that have clearly shown me what I need to work on next.
They are the ones
I love because
they are part of humanity,
but they are not the ones
I choose to spend time with.
Yet I am ever mindful they too
have been used by the Ultimate
to teach me and help me grow.
They too bring me a lesson
which will help me grow and evolve
and in a way that only they can help me.
So to those of you who have helped me
by hurting me,
shedding light on the pain,
the lessons, and
the journey.
Thank you,
for helping me grow,
heal,
and evolve.

My Things

November 20, 2020 Sharon Jacobson

My _____

What are you grateful for?
Each morning I write in my gratitude journal
and give thanks for at least 5 things.
Sometimes it is people,
places, or
things.
It is the things
that struck me this morning.
What if I started
recognizing the things
in my life
as gifts from the Universe.
What if I saw the
Divine in those things
in my life.
What if I saw
the utensils I write with
or my desk,
or my printer,
or my water bottle
or each thing
which is in my life
as something
for which I should
give thanks
and be grateful
and treat with reverence.
Each blesses me in its own way
and helps me in my journey
and for all they do for me
I give thanks.

Giving Thanks

May 29, 2020 Sharon Jacobson

As a child I would get a toy
and it would be the focus
of all my attention
until it was no longer new and
then I began paying it little attention

Life is like that as well.
We have so many things
we forget to give thanks for
because they are no longer new
sparkling, and the focus
of our attention

Then something happens and
we begin to give thanks for that
which we once took for granted
like sitting next to someone
and holding their hand.
or breathing,
traveling,
walking,
visiting and
living our lives

May we give thanks for
the times which remind us
that these are gifts
not to be taken for granted,
because someone,
somewhere
cannot just do them
for a moment,
they cannot do them at all
I give thanks
for what I am mindful of
and that which I am not.
May the universe continue
to remind me of that which
I have, like an old toy,
forgotten and taken for granted.
