My Teachers

December 13, 2024 Sharon Jacobson

My Teachers

When I think about my best teachers
I first think about the ones
I loved taking classes with,
those that touched my heart
and who allowed me to know
I was loved and respected.
They may have been some of my best teachers
academically,
but some of my best teachers in life
were the people I have not liked at all.
They were the ones I found difficult,
the ones who got on my last nerve.
and the ones who I struggled to find
anything nice in them.
The reality is in the school of life,
they were some of my best teachers.
They are the ones who pushed me
out of my comfort zone
and helped me grow and evolve.
They registered me for classes
I never would have taken.
They taught me lessons
I would never have learned on my own.
I am grateful for all my teachers,
the ones who I wanted to learn from and grow with
and the ones who forced me
to step outside my comfort zone
and grow.

Teachers

Teachers

After as many years as I have spent taking classes
I have met my share of teachers.
However, those who have taught me the most
in my life
are not amongst them.
There were a few like Dr Diane Samdahl and Dr Gail Ricciuti
who will always have a place in my heart
because that is where they taught from.
My life has been filled with people ,
like my wife, who has taught me what it is like
to truly be loved unconditionally.
Events,
like when I felt the feeling leave my right side and leg,
which taught me how to walk in faith and grace in all situations.
Places,
like our prayer garden,
which have taught me how the universe works and if I blink
I will miss the miracles happening before my eyes.
Things,
like my wax melts
which remind me to stop and breathe
and learn from the memories which still live in me
The teachers in my life,
are more then the people;
they are the place, things, moments, and experiences
which teach me
when I open myself to learning
what they strive to teach.

Enriching

August 11, 2023 Sharon Jacobson

Enriching

How is God enriching you now?
That was the question
someone asked me.
It has stopped me and made me question
how is God improving me right now.
How is God enriching me?
How is God making me of greater value
to myself, others, or the world.
With all the challenges I have faced today,
I know they have been filled with opportunities
for me to grow and evolve.
Today I am learning how to be strong
and advocate for myself.
I am learning how to farm,
as I have had to figure out what I need to do
and when so that all is in place
that needs to be.
I am learning how to be more forgiving
and love unconditionally,
even when others think things are more important
then our relationships.
I am learning to laugh and
surrender and not let life
steal my joy.
Maybe there is more,
but in the midst of this
rather frustrating day
this is how I feel myself
being enriched.

Transforming

April 1, 2023 Sharon Jacobson

Transforming

Have you ever sat in amazement at how
God works in mysterious ways.
whether it is how people are bought together
or situations which arise to teach us lessons,
the Universe works in mysterious ways
to help us grow, evolve, and transform.
I keep learning how to transform how I see the situation.
Whether it is moving out of the stress and into peace
or releasing the victim role it is easy to fall into,
creatively transforming the situation
moves me through and teaches me lessons about life.
Like when my wheelchair was not running properly
and I felt my stress level rising
because my fairly new wheelchair was not working.
Before I completely lost it,
I remembered to stop and look for the blessings.
I began to give thanks for the warranty,
the spare chair in the garage,
the friend who cleared the drive of snow so it could come in the
house.
I remembered that prayer and meditation relieve my stress,
so I stopped, napped and released my concerns to the Ultimate.
I remembered I can still walk very short distances
and I have a wife who helps me when I need assistance.
By looking for the blessings,
thanks to my Bubby’s wisdom,
this situation, and others,
transformed itself from frustrating to fruitful,
all because I was willing to learn and transform.

To Those I Should Thank

To Those I Should Thank

Thanks.
It is easy for me to thank the ones I love,
the ones who support me,
surround me with unconditional love,
grace,
mercy,
and affirmations.
it is easy to say thank you
to the ones I want to thank.
Then there are those
who I jokingly say have saved me
so much money.
They are the ones
I would prefer not to thank
but I am truly grateful for their being
these heat sinking missles
that have clearly shown me what I need to work on next.
They are the ones
I love because
they are part of humanity,
but they are not the ones
I choose to spend time with.
Yet I am ever mindful they too
have been used by the Ultimate
to teach me and help me grow.
They too bring me a lesson
which will help me grow and evolve
and in a way that only they can help me.
So to those of you who have helped me
by hurting me,
shedding light on the pain,
the lessons, and
the journey.
Thank you,
for helping me grow,
heal,
and evolve.

Not A Mathematical Formula

May 26, 2017 Sharon Jacobson

I am so grateful to have my position as a teacher. At the start of each semester I am reminded what a blessing and privilege it is to be in this position. I have heard way too many professors at my school talk about what they have to teach their students. I talk with my students about how we teach each other. Yes, I know a lot and I am here to share my knowledge with them. However, they have taken classes, experienced things, read things, taken courses, and know things I could not learn if I had not met them.

I am also reminded of how much harm the educational system has done to students. I remember reading a book a while back called A Whack on the Side of the Head by Roger van Oech. He helped me to understand how our system has taught students that there is A right answer, when there is really not. He wrote,

By the time the average person finishes college he or she will have taken over 2,600 tests, quizzes and exams.  The 'right answer' approach becomes deeply ingrained in our thinking.  This may be fine for some mathematical problems, where there is in fact only one right answer.  The difficulty is that most of life isn't that way.  Life is ambiguous; there are many right answers - all depending on what you are looking for.  But if you think there is only one right answer, then you'll stop looking as soon as you find one.

Kitty Lessons

May 5, 2017 Sharon Jacobson

Dear God,

So today I want to thank you for the lessons that Dr. Wally and Mr Mittens have tried to teach me. Some of them I have mastered more then others, but at least they have tried. So thank you for sending them into my life. So here goes.

Lesson #1 – Never be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Mr Mittens has taught me to be willing to explore what is on the other side of my comfort zone. He always tries to get through the doors that are closed and when he senses it is not where he needs to be he leaves and if he really likes it, then he stays. He has taught me a similar message to what I am reading about now in Kyle Cease’s book I Hope I Screw This Up. It is the same message my Bubby used to tell me, “She who fails to fail, fails to succeed.”

Lesson #2 – Take a nap. Cats seem to do this so well. Whenever they are tired, they sleep, which with them is about 16 hours a day. Working at home, I have the luxury of taking a nap when I really need one. Sometimes it is the way for me to quiet my brain so I can hear your ideas and inspiration coming to me. Sometimes it is just that my brain and body need a break.  Even you took a rest from creating, so I should too.

Listening Lessons

August 20, 2016 Sharon Jacobson

Dear God,

Honestly, sometimes it is so easy to see the meaning in what is happening, but sometimes life seems so busy it is hard to hear you speaking. So right now I am working on slowing down and being intentional about having the time to listen.

What I have learned is that taking the time to listen is like taking a pilgrimage to the Holy Land where I have to enter life and lean in and listen.

This past week I have been reminded that life is unpredictable. By listening to you and your guidance I have found what I needed to lift me up and been able to find new ways of thinking about things. Even what initially felt like the worst of situations became transformative and life giving because you challenged me to enter into the situation, sit with you, and grow.
