Keep on Learning

February 12, 2024 Sharon Jacobson

Keep on Learning

“In the beginner’s mind
there are many possibilities,
in the expert’s mind
there are few.” Shunryu Suzuki
I love this quote,
because it reminds me to
always be learning something new.
The more often I make myself
a beginner,
the more possibilities unfold
before me.
I keep learning
because it means i continue to see
that which I could not see before.
Every time I give myself the chance to learn,
I also give myself the chance to share
and make a difference in my life
and yours.

100% of our donations go to support our ability to provide low and no cost offerings to I those seeking to grow and evolve spiritually.

Spiritual Detective

August 10, 2020 Sharon Jacobson

I used to love mystery novels,
but now I am playing the detective
in my own life.
I follow the clues
the things I see,
the things which fall between the cracks
and are visible but not.
I follow the scents,
the sounds,
the tastes,
the textures
and all that life offers
as I work my way through
that which I do not know,
do not understand,
and wonder about in my life.
I follow the clues,
I peel back the layers,
I look at things with a magnifying glass,
to make sure I get even the tiniest of clues.
I keep on the case,
until I solve the mystery,
and know I have come
to a deeper understanding,
to a deeper relationship
with the one who sent me
the clues
in the first place.

Learning from Death

June 22, 2020 Sharon Jacobson

There is not a day that goes by
that something in our lives does not die.
Sometimes it is people,
or our furbabies,
a situation,
a relationship,
or a belief.
We may like to believe
that life and death are separate,
but they are like partners
in a a dance.
Death touches our lives
sometimes it cuts us
like a knife.
Other times there is
a complexity of feelings
like a bottle of wine.
Sometimes, we are grateful to let go,
but at the same time,
we feel the pain
which comes with the death.
In all of it we know,
that what it was existed,
for a season,
a purpose,
and taught us
what we needed to learn
before it left us.
In the midst of it all,
it taught us about
the mysteries of life,
love,
learning,
and death.

Invisible

May 11, 2020 Sharon Jacobson

I have always been told
that I cannot see or understand
the way the Divine does.
My vision is not God’s and
God’s understandings are not mine.
So don’t try to think or see
like the Ultimate
because that is not you.

Before I try to think or see
like the Ultimate,
I need to learn to see and understand?
the parts of me which
are invisible to me.
I need to explore that
which I have not wanted to see
or understand
or explore.

I need to deal with the
invisibility within
before I attempt to deal
with the invisible of the Ultimate.
I need to work on removing
all that affects my own being
in this world and blurs,
distorts, or makes
invisible
my understanding of myself or others.

Hearing

April 22, 2019 Sharon Jacobson

One of the things my students have taught me is to
do more than listen.
They want me to hear them.
They want me to remember
they are on a journey
of their own.
They want to learn from my journey,
but want me to learn from theirs.

Hearing
is not just about being heard,
but about hearing.
It is a process of sharing
the wisdom we have both gathered
with each other, but we must be open to
hearing.

It doesn’t matter who the other is,
whether they are the same age or not,
the same sex, race, ethnicity or class or not.
What matters is that we hear them,
that we open ourselves to hearing their truth,
and ask them to be open to hearing ours.
Let’s change the world today by
hearing.

The Long Haul

May 8, 2017 Sharon Jacobson

Recently in Why the Chicken Crossed the Road, I was reading this story about a student who wanted to be taught the Iron Shirt Exercises. There are a series of exercises used to allow the body’s natural energy to support its structural strength. Dean Sluyter wrote, "There's a story in Chinese martial-arts tradition about a young man who begs a great Kung-fu master to teach him the Iron Shirt exercises, an esoteric system reputed to make the muscles and organs so strong that they are impervious to blows. The master at first refuses, but finally sets him a kung (a formidable challenge). Pointing to a thick tree, he says, "Pull up that tree and bring it to me; then I'll teach you Iron Shirt." After months of futile tugging, the student notices that he can get better leverage if he keeps his back straight. With further experimentation he finds the optimal way to plant his feet. He works on, incrementally adjusting the way he hugs the tree, the way he breathes, the way he visualizes the task. After four years the tree starts to give. Finally he uproots it and lays it at the master's feet, demanding, 'Now teach me Iron Shirt!' 'Now I don't have to,' the master replies. 'You've just learned it.' "

There are lessons we learn in life which we learn quickly. There are also lessons that cannot be learned quickly, they are lessons like learning to pull up this tree, that are learned over the long haul. One of the lessons I have learned in life is that there is always more to a job then is written in the job description. The job description can tell you what you are supposed to be doing, but what you actually wind up doing is far more complex then that. I have been working as an adjunct professor for 20 years now and my job description is simple. I teach the two classes assigned to me each semester and offer office hours to my students where they can access me.
