Sacred

October 4, 2021 Sharon Jacobson

Sacred

I sit here at Zoe’s computer
and I give thanks that we have one computer
which has access to the intenet.
It is one of those things we take for granted.
until we do not have it.
Then we see the sacred in it.
It makes me wonder what else I
do not see the sacred in.
Do I see it in the air,
the water,
the earth, or
the fire.
Do I see the sacred
in my food,
in my clothes
in the furniture
or in anything I touch or see today.
What if
we aw the sacred in everything?
How would the world be different if
we saw and honored
the sacred in our lives

SACRED LISTENING

Sacred Listening

If you listened to your thoughts
that float through your mind
would you feel like a garbage collector
like I do sometimes.
I try to catch the toxic waste which
floats through my mind before it has a chance
to settle and poison other aspects of my life.
I try to catch those thoughts and
question the beliefs which
I would not want to share with the sacred.
If I work on healing while I gather
it allows me to help my thoughts and ideas
heal and transform,
becoming increasingly sacred
with each passing day.
I would love to say this is easy,
but its not
and many moments I fail.
However, I continue to transform
and work on helping the internal stream
become increasingly sacred.

Silliness

January 6, 2020 Sharon Jacobson

The message came again
take time
and be silly
because
silliness
is a blessing.

Silly
has its roots in
being blessed.
When I am
silly I am
blessing others.

Silliness
allows me to
help others and
experience the Ultimate
in ways which
transform,
lighten,
and help us
see the humor in the
one we take all too
seriously.

Be silly.
Be sacred.
Be blessed.

Finding the Sacred

October 28, 2019 Sharon Jacobson

The sacred is everywhere in our lives.
It is in the ordinary moments,
people,
places
and things.

The sacred can be found in
our daily life,
in the simple things we do like
brushing our teeth,
going to the bathroom,
eating an orange,
running water,
walking down the hallway,
or just breathing.

The sacred can be found in
our neighbors,
friends,
family,
colleagues,
team mates,
acquaintances, and
strangers.

The sacred can be found in
our backyard,
our neighborhood,
parks,
malls,
garbage cans,
and the cracks in the sidewalk.

The sacred can be found in
our thoughts,
our feelings,
our visions, and
our creations.

We can find the sacred
when we open our senses
and allow ourselves to see,
feel,
hear,
taste,
touch,
smell, and
experience it
in everyday life.

It was decades ago
when she left three little pieces of paper
on my treadmill that said
I
Love
You

They still are with me
in my drawer.
They are sacred, holy and
a paper tabernacle
holding the gift of love
from the one who loves me
unconditionally

Her notes are not alone.
They are accompanied
by sacred notes from others
images,
gifts of sacred love from others

Through writing we can express
our intimacy,
our friendship,
our love,
what others mean to us.
Our letters have the potential
to become someone’s
paper tabernacle

A holy space
where the sacred gift of love is stored
where one keeps reminders of what one means,
the friendship we share,
the intimate moments,
which bond us together.

They are more than just pieces of paper.
They are sacred and holy.
They are paper tabernacles.

A Room of My Own

April 24, 2017 Sharon Jacobson

This past month I have come to realize that when I make room for silence in my life, I am creating a room of my own. It is the simplest addition to my home that I can create. There is no building permit needed, no contractors, no designers. All I need to do is sit, be still, and be. In doing so, I create a room which is my ashram. It is my place to just be in communion with the one I call the Ultimate Consciousness. I do not need anything here. I do not need candles, or pillows, or cushions, or furniture. I just need to be still and be in the presence of the Divine.

My room is not external, although it could happen in a physical room. It is a room within myself. It is one that only I and the Divine are allowed to enter. It is a room constructed by holy silence. It is here where I tap into a strength that prevents the noises of life from being heard. It is a space where the only things I can hear is my breathing, my feelings, and the whispers of the Sacred. It is as if I am in one of those soundproof booths and all I can hear is what I can hear, nothing more, nothing less.

Sacred Activism

April 30, 2016 Sharon Jacobson

It is hard to talk about justice without talking about the activist work, intentionally or accidentally, which is needed to bring change in our world. While there are things that are going well and are worthy of being celebrated in the ongoing fight for human rights and justice, there are also numerous crises facing our world including extreme poverty, environmental destruction and depletion, emotional, mental and relationship disconnects in life. In efforts to bring about systemic and structural change, activists often feel discouraged and doubt their ability to make a difference. Building on the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr., Andrew Harvey offers an approach known as sacred activism, which engages compassion and love. Harvey offers eleven practices which we can do to engage in sacred activism in our daily lives. These practices call on us deepen and nourish our personal connection with spirit and then to use this deeper connection in our actions to transform this world.

1.      Be Grateful.  Harvey suggests that each day we write down one thing which make you feel grateful to be alive.

Alone

April 22, 2014 Sharon Jacobson

Someone I know once told me they would rather be in a relationship, which was abusive and miserable, then be alone. The other day someone told me how being alone was the scariest time in their life. Increasingly, I am encountering people who would rather be around people who they do not like, then be alone. So what has made being alone such a thing to be feared? The question I asked both of them was what is it that you see in yourself when you are alone that makes it feel better to be treated badly by someone else? What they both said was that it was not about them, but that they did not want to be alone. What I have come to realize over the course of my life is that until we can be alone with ourselves, we cannot be present with anyone else.

There is a difference between desiring someone to cuddle with at night. There is nothing wrong with wanting to share a meal or talk with someone over a glass of wine or cup of coffee. Part of who we are as human beings is the desire to commune with others, to communicate and seek companionship and camaraderie. However, it can be unhealthy to avoid the sacred nature of being alone because one is scared to spend time communing with one’s self.
