Giving

September 18, 2026 Sharon Jacobson

Giving

I have always found
it is easier for me to give
then to receive.
it is not about what I am giving others,
it is that in it,
in whatever gift I am giving,
I am giving a part of myself.
I am sharing myself,
to be a part of life’s journey.
When others give to me,
it is so humbling
it reminds me they are
sharing with me
as I have with them.
It allows me to feel
the reciprocity in our relationship.
When I allow others to give to me,
I am humbling myself
as they did
as we both recognize
our reliance on each other.
Giving
is about more than the transaction.
it is about the love,
the compassion,
and the feelings we have for each other.
Feel the gift
as you give and
receive what others
are giving you

PMS

Pause
Meditate
Sabbath
that was the guidance
Shoni Labowitz gave her readers.
This new acronym
caused me to do just that
pause
and think about
pausing.
Pausing
challenges us to stop
and break habits,
especially the ones we do
without even thinking
Pausing
invites us to be in the moment
and be present.
Pausing
invites us
to sit with the Ultimate,
pause
and meditate.
Meditate
so we quiet our mind
clear away the stress
and the daily clutter.
Meditate
to sit more fully
with the Ultimate
and experiencing
stillness,
compassion
and a deeper connection
to ourselves
and our purpose.
Meditate
because it reminds us
to Sabbath.
Sabbath
is more than a time,
it is the experience
of ceasing,
resting
reflecting
and delighting.
Sabbath
is about us giving to ourselves
and to others.
Sabbath is
about disengaging
from the clutter
and engaging with
the Ultimate and
all that brings you joy.

It just takes a moment

June 23, 2026 Sharon Jacobson

It just takes a moment

Not everyone can be kind and caring,
not all of us can afford it.”
They said to me and then began ghosting me.
It doesn’t cost anything to be enriched,
or to enrich others.
Each day is filled with the opportunities
to enrich and be enriched.
The simple act of offering
costs nothing
and enriches all.
It just takes a moment to be compassionate,
and in that moment our compassion enriches
and enriches us.
Compassion enables us to
release our ego
and have empathy for others.
I don’t have to go through your pain,
but I can empathize with it
and be compassionate.
It just takes a moment to smile.
Smiling is not only contagious for others,
but enriches us as well,
filling our bodies with hormones
that make us happier
and it costs nothing to smile.
Loving words cost nothing,
but for some it can be like cold water on a hot summer day.
It can be as simple as paying a compliment,
or encouraging them and telling them
they can make it through
it just takes a moment to praise them
and tell them what you love about them.
It doesn't cost anything to offer help.
to say can I do this for you,
or can I do something to lighten your load.
Doing something simple like taking out the trash,
or listening to them and
allowing them to feel heard
enriches everyone.
it doesn’t cost anything to share your heart,
offer them time to listen,
to offer them a seat,
or to simply hold their hand.
None of this costs anything,
but offering of ourselves
enriches us and them
and all of it can happen
in just a moment.

Meditations of My Heart

April 20, 2026 Sharon Jacobson

Meditations of My Heart

How many times have I said or heard the phrase
the meditations of my heart.
it’s more than our thoughts and words
be pleasing to God.
For me, it has come to mean more
than just words and thoughts.
It is about the literal meditations
There is this communication that occurs
when you allow yourself to feel your heartbeat.
When you feel it and listen to it,
you develop a connection
to the frequency of the Divine.
You build a connection between your heart
and the heart of the world.
At times, I feel this quivering
as I connect to the suffering in the world.
What I feel is more than I can think.
It is about the deep feeling,
the true compassion,
the understanding that there is not a me and a they,
there is just an us.
There is a movement away
from selfishness to selflessness.
With each beat of my heart
I feel myself engaging with the pain of others,
and refusing to retreat from it
as I have the privilege to do.
The meditations of my heart
say these are your neighbours,
your brothers and sisters,
give unto them
as you would have them give unto you.
Share with them,
support them,
walk with them,
and know that together
we are working against
the hardening of all our hearts.
The future of our world
is not just about the meditation of my heart,
it is also about the meditation of yours.

How Do You Love the World?

March 2, 2026 Sharon Jacobson

How Do You Love the World?
You seem to love the world,
how do you do it?
how do you love the world?
one of my students asked me.
How I do is simple and not,
but what fuels me is my why.
In every spiritual path I have encountered
is a lesson to love one another.
The words may vary,
but the message is the same
love one another.
How I do it,
if I indeed do,
starts with me
and being loving with and showing love to myself.
Michael Jackson said
to start with the person in the mirror.
HGTV said to start at home.
So one way I show love to the world
is by loving myself
and that is not always easy.
Loving the world
is about nurturing relationships.
seeing beauty,
and showing grace,
even when we do not want to do that.
It starts with us.
With us giving thanks
for all we have and all we have not.
Focusing on the blessings
reduces our anxiety and frustration.
Being kind to others,
smiling at someone,
letting them know they are enough,
sending a thoughtful message,
any random act of kindness,
sends love into the world.
Every time we give
of our heart,
our minds,
our souls,
we are pouring love into the world.
Believing in others,
searching out the good in them
and helping them see it in themselves.
it is so easy to put others down,
and there are so many who will and do do that.
So be the one who helps others
see the light within them.
As my Bubby once said,
hold people as if they are a newborn.
Be patient, gentle and kind
as the Ultimate has always been with you.
See the beauty in all of creation,
in nature,
animals,
the colors,
the scents,
the textures,
the tastes,
and give thanks.
See loving the world is not hard.
it’s about being mindful
and serving others,
and sharing with others the love
we receive so freely
from the Ultimate
who asks us to love one another
because together we are the world
and when we love each other
we love the world.
This is how I do it.
This is how I love the world.

February

February 2, 2026 Sharon Jacobson

February

February is about ____
Groundhog’s Day, Valentine’s Day and Game Day.
or so others told me.
As I look at the whiteness of the snow,
I am reminded me of purity and preparation.
nothing can hold back the spring,
while we wait
we prepare,
for a time of cleansing and cleaning.
We prepare to let go of
all which weighs us down.
We make room for
the growth in us
and in our environment
which is about to spring forth.
It is a time for reflection,
self-compassion,
healing,
and releasing.
it is a season for decluttering,
for clearing out the old
and making room for the new.
It is a time of transformation
as we release all that prevents us
from moving towards and in
our spiritual purpose in life.
February is not about
a series of commercialized days
it is about compassion, caring and cleansing.

Have I

July 25, 2022 Sharon Jacobson

Have I ___

It was a song
have I done any ____,
and it gave me a whole list of things to consider.
It got me thinking about
how do I show compassion,
and kindness
and my devotion to serving others.
Have I done anything today
that touched anyone’s life,
helped them have an everyday win,
made them smile, or
made them feel loved.
Have I done anything to help others?
Have I
showed compassion,
devotion,
kindness? Have I helped anyone? Have I lold people when they did well?
Have I been present
and mindful
loving, considerate and kind
or remembered to say
you are loved.
Have I done anything today
to touch you and your life?

We Care

December 20, 2021 Sharon Jacobson

We Care

It’s the end of a long day
and I was sitting at my computer exhausted
after another 16 hour day
when the surprise came.
An unexpected message from someone
asking me how I was.
It dawned on me
how authentic her message sounded.
It wasn’t like the how are you
that you hear as somebody walks past you
before you can even answer.
It was an authentic how are you
followed by this level of awareness.
I know this is a stressful and hectic time for you
I noticed you are still up
which means you are probably still working
so I wanted to see how you were
and let you know you are in my prayers.
There is something powerful
when you know that people care
and that they really want to know
how you are.
It’s that real and powerful
how are you,
not the one that
feels like you are asking
to be polite
but don’t have the time
or the intention to really listen.
During these times,
which are stressful for all,
may we remember to let people know that
we care.

I Wish You Well

July 29, 2021 Sharon Jacobson
unsplash-image-_fVRg3C6XHE.jpg

I Wish You Well

Each day I choose how
I treat others, regardless of
how I feel about them personally.
I do not have to like you
but because I am called to love you,
I wish others well,
even if it is from a distance.
I was asked how I can do that.
The answer is simple,
the golden rule,
which reminds me to do unto others,
as I would have them do unto me.
Or as I once heard a nun say,
Go with God, but go.
I am called to love humanity,
it does not mean I have to like them.
So whether I like others or not,
I wish you well,
and pray that you do the same for me.

Fantasy

December 23, 2019 Sharon Jacobson

We all fantasize,
but how many of us
fantasize
about being of greater service
to the one we call our Higher Power

What do you fantasize about?
Is it about fighting for equality
amongst all of humanity?
Or is it about working to bring about
world peace?
Perhaps it is about practicing patience
or compassion with all of humanity.
Perhaps it is about promoting
healing and wholeness

May we open
our heart, mind, and soul to
fantasizing about
making it on earth
as it is in Heaven
or at least
as we fantasize
it to be.

Together

October 21, 2019 Sharon Jacobson

You know who you are.
You are the one who pesters me
and works to get on my last nerve.
You are the one who tries to get my attention
in the least positive of ways.
You are the one who works to
irritate me,
annoy me,
and grate on me.

I want you to know
I know you are hurting.
I know you are in need of
love and compassion.
I know you need me to
show you compassion and grace
because not only are you hurting,
but like me you are a child of the Creator.

So each time you try to get on my nerves,
I am going to wrap you in love.
I am going to be the
balm for your wounds.
I am going to show you
new ways of getting the

attention you need and deserve.

Together we will grow and heal.
Together we develop character.
Together we will make this world
a more loving place
for all in need of healing.

Sacred Activism

April 30, 2016 Sharon Jacobson

It is hard to talk about justice without talking about the activist work, intentionally or accidentally, which is needed to bring change in our world. While there are things that are going well and are worthy of being celebrated in the ongoing fight for human rights and justice, there are also numerous crises facing our world including extreme poverty, environmental destruction and depletion, emotional, mental and relationship disconnects in life. In efforts to bring about systemic and structural change, activists often feel discouraged and doubt their ability to make a difference. Building on the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr., Andrew Harvey offers an approach known as sacred activism, which engages compassion and love. Harvey offers eleven practices which we can do to engage in sacred activism in our daily lives. These practices call on us deepen and nourish our personal connection with spirit and then to use this deeper connection in our actions to transform this world.

1.      Be Grateful.  Harvey suggests that each day we write down one thing which make you feel grateful to be alive.

Love Your Enemy

April 29, 2015 Sharon Jacobson

For the last several weeks, our Wednesday night group has been listening to a five-hour workshop by Pema Chodrom about releasing fear and living with courage and compassion. In it, she has talked about how Bodhisattva training encourages us to give up our separateness and act upon our deep connections with others. Over the course of these conversations, we have focused on how similar we are to each other. Yes, we have things about us that are unique, but we have far more in common with each other then we often times realize. As we practice being compassionate, we begin the process of releasing our resentments and cravings, and opening our minds to new relationships, courage, and compassion for others. Chödrön demonstrates ways to practice the four limitless qualities of loving — kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. Last week, we did a meditational practice where we began by breathing in relief for suffering for someone we were close to and exhaling peace and healing in their lives. We could have actually started with ourselves. However, in her workshop she began with those we would want to pray for, then to more neutral parties in our life, and finally with those whom we would resist praying for in our lives.

Compassion and Anger

April 7, 2015 Sharon Jacobson

Have you ever found yourself getting angry or irritated at someone? One of the things I learned about anger, and any emotion, is that it can only stay alive for so long on its own. So when we stay angry or irritated for a long period, it is because at some level we have made a commitment to keeping it alive. Did you know an emotion has a natural life of about 30 seconds? If it lasts longer than that, it is because we are choosing to keep it alive. So when we stay angry all day, or for years, it is because we are choosing to stay angry. There is nothing wrong with a feeling, however, it is important for a feeling not to control us or become our identity.

The other night someone asked me if I ever got angry.

Be Still

April 1, 2015 Sharon Jacobson

As many of you know, the theme for March has been about being present and the theme for April is about compassion. This week, I decided to talk about something which blends these two spiritual practices together. Being still is about being present and sometimes being present means that we have to be compassionate with ourselves as well as others.

Those who know me, know that being still is not something I do easily. I am generally always doing something. However, I am intentional about taking time in the morning to meditate, sit, and be still!

The Razor's Edge

August 6, 2013 Sharon Jacobson
razor's edge.jpg

The journey to find the authentic self, the self you were created to be is not always easy.  It is as W. Somerset Maugham wrote about like the razor’s edge.  This novel, The Razor’s Edge tells the story of an American, Larry Darrell, who, traumatized by his experiences as a fighter pilot in World War I, decides to search for some transcendent meaning in his life.  This is the story of a man who refuses to conform to the ways of the world, rejects conventional life, and searches for his authentic self.  This is the story of one man's quest for inner peace and enlightenment.  It is the tale of one person’s spiritual journey.

You are more then a number.

July 2, 2013 Sharon Jacobson

We had just finished healing harbor last night. I was feeling spiritually fulfilled that we had been able to provide healing to so many people. At the same time, I was physically exhausted, my body ached from the rain, my eyes itched from my allergies, and every cell in my being just wanted to crawl into bed. It had been a marvelous and enriching day and then one of my healing staff said something, which just made the whole day a little brighter. “I really like your hair like that.” All I could do was take a deep breath and say was “thank you.” The funny thing was that I have wanted to shave it all off again, but Zoe has been encouraging me to let it grow.

Lessons from a One Legged Duck

June 17, 2013 Sharon Jacobson
duck.jpg

Several years ago, someone asked me how I came to this space of compassion for humanity in my life. I remember the question as if it were yesterday. At first, I was not sure how I was going to answer the question, and then this simple word floated up from my heart – LIFE.

I once heard LIFE was an acronym for Love Is For Everyone. The simplicity of that message resonated with me because it was part of what I have learned my entire life. It was a valuable lesson I learned from my parents who made room in their hearts for an infant who was looking for a home. My parents believed that their love, as parents, was for me and for my two brothers who arrived a few years later. Love is for everyone.

Making that Change

June 10, 2013 Sharon Jacobson
change.jpg

Last week, I ended by asking how we use our status in the world to create a more humane world. How do we, consciously or unconsciously, contribute to the inhumanity in the world? How do we try to avoid and deny responsibility for our place in creating a more humane world for all of humanity?

We have this tendency in our culture to blame people for not having achieved as much or done as well as others. We see things at an individual level and rarely look at the systemic forces that make it more difficult for some to achieve or have access to what seems within the grasp of others. Rather than be willing to critically look at these issues and the ways they are embedded within larger institutions and systems of injustice and inequality, people tend to try to get off the hook by denying and/or minimizing the situation or blaming the situation on the “victim.”

E is for Empty

January 1, 2013 Sharon Jacobson
emptiness.jpg

This might seem like a strange way to begin my first blog for this New Year, but empty for me is an awesome space to be at in my life. I am not talking about the stressful kind of empty like when you run out of gas on the highway because you did not realize your gas tank was empty. Nor am I talking about that space when you may feel like you are running on empty because you have no energy left in your life. Nor am I talking about how you feel like your life is empty of love, life, and meaning, although that too would be a great focus for a reflection. Rather, I am talking about this state of happiness and bliss, which comes when one is empty, and in need of nothing.
