What are you Teaching?

April 12, 2025 Sharon Jacobson

What are you Teaching?

What are you teaching this semester?
I get asked that so frequently.
I could say the names of the courses,
or I can say the disciplines I teach for,
but what I really want to say is this.
I teach people how to become 3 things,
regardless of their discipline.
I teach them to be scholars
bridge builders
and philanthropists.
I teach them to learn how to learn,
to think and question.
I teach them that walls are easier to construct
then bridges,
but walls divide
and bridges unite,
so work with others
and build bridges
Finally, I teach them to be philanthropists.
In all that we learn,
I teach them about giving back
with their time,
their talents,
and their treasures.
I teach them this
because its about making a difference,
working with others,
helping others,
and living in a way
where we walk a path
that is about generosity.
Where each step is about giving.
Giving with our hands,
our heads,
and our hearts.
Five years from now,
they may not remember what they read,
but I hope they do remember
what I taught them
and are sharing those lessons with others.

Find Your Hallelujah

November 15, 2024 Sharon Jacobson

Find Your Hallelujah

Do you know what it is like
to find your hallelujah?
Do you know what it is like
to be filled with so much delight
in your heart, mind, body, and
everything and everyone in your life
that it feels so great to be alive
and you just want to scream
it's good to be alive.
I had had those moments in my life
and they are so hard to explain,
but you know when you have them
and others can tell
just by looking at you
that you found your hallelujah.
Never give up when life gets tough,
because your hallelujah is coming.
Sometimes those moments are bigger then others
but they are still there
and you can still experience them
and others will be moved when they see
you find yours.
It is the challenging times,
that make you appreciate those moments,
that you just have to scream
hallelujah.
Go find yours
and never stop working towards
and living for the next chance to
find your hallelujah.

With Every Beat

July 14, 2024 Sharon Jacobson

With Every Beat

We would put our hands on our hearts
and say the pledge of allegiance
and my teacher said
it was how we honored our
flag, country and government.
When I place my hand on my heart now,
I have a completely different experience.
I am not thinking about pledging allegiance.
instead I feel my heart beating
and with each beat,
I am reminded that I am still here
and I am here to be of service to others.
I am here to show radical hospitality to others.
I am here to show compassion to others.
I am here to radiate love, light and positive energy
to all people,
to all living things,
to the entire universe.
My hand on my heart reminds me
of the warmth I feel,
the things which bring warmth into my life
and the ways I radiate warmth to others.
My hand on my heart reminds me
about the miracles happening within me
and within you
that keeps our hearts beating,
and us waking up each morning.
It reminds me to be grateful,
to be appreciative
and to be joyful
for the miracle I get to feel
with every beat of my heart

FEAR

October 14, 2022 Sharon Jacobson

FEAR

Fear,
I can live with it or without it.
Fear,
I was told is,
False Evidence Appearing Real.
I was told the way through it is to
Face Everything And Rise.
Facing everything has meant
I have to open my heart
to new ways of being and seeing in the world.
it means I have to seek the real
and not let it constrain me.
it means I embrace living
and not let fear kill me.
Living with or without fear is a choice.
Each day I choose to embrace life,
I choose to release my fears.
What have you chosen?

My Tears

July 17, 2020 Sharon Jacobson

My tears
they roll down my face
and sometimes
when I am having a good cry
they moisten the ground
because the pain flowing
out of my heart is so power
and so intense.
Like the Native Americans
of days gone by
I leave a trail of tear.
These tears are a trail
that pre pare me for the future.
My tears are like rain,
they keep the soil most
so growth can happen.
My tears
keep my heart moist
so it never becomes
hard and uncaring.
My tears
keep me humble
and help me give
thanks for all I have
not had to endure in my life.
My tears
keep me connected
to humanity and
allow me to empathize
with their pain.
My tears
enable me to give thanks
to the universe
for the pain and suffering
without which
I would not be me.

Caring for my Heart

June 21, 2019 Sharon Jacobson

Go to the gym
because your body needs
exercise.
Eat healthy.
All things in moderation.
These are a few of the things
I hear about caring for my body.

My heart needs more than
a cardio workout.
It needs love.
It needs to be touched,
caressed,
molded,
educated, and
refined.

It needs words,
actions,
feelings,
sounds,
images,
scents,
and ideas
which reach in and
caress my heart.

It comes to me through prayer,
meditation,
music.
art,
poetry,
and the whispers from above.

Sometimes it is the
creations of others
and sometimes it is the
conversations of my soul.
My poetry is
one way I speak
to my heart
and hopefully
to the hearts of others.

You just did a new thing

October 29, 2016 Sharon Jacobson

Dear God

So this is my last time this month to write to you about openness. So today I just want to thank you for all you have shown me and taught me about being open. You have shined a light on all the closed signs I had in my heart, mind, and soul and helped me to replace them with open signs.

I thought the possibility of my Pampered Chef team being green this month was closed, but you said watch me, I am about to do a new thing and you opened up possibilities that I could not see before.

I thought I had lost a team member who seemed like she was shutting down and you said watch and you reopened the relationship. When you did, you opened up a level of honesty in the relationship which did not exist before. You moved her from a position of living in fear and watering someone else’s yard to realizing she needed to water her own.
